We make soil

The Soil Hub is where volunteers from community group Transition Town Vincent (TTV) make and combine the main components of soil*. We make soil for use in our

various projects including:

regenerative urbanism

Regenerative urbanism

  • Community food forest
  • Black Cockatoo pocket forests
  • Volunteer projects

Soil can also be made to order for a donation.

The basic ingredients we use include:

  • Air
  • Water
  • Biomass
  • Organisms
  • Biochar
  • Sweat

We make a variety of products include compost (humus), co-composted biochar and liquid teas.

Meetup

We generally meet at the Soil Hub twice a week:

  • Wednesday mornings 9-11am
  • Saturday mornings 10-12noon

Members also go there at other times. Activities include making soil making (aka composting), soil spreading, and general gardening activities. We may also do special projects such as setting up new compost bays. Sometimes someone brings tea/coffee as well as cake or biscuits.

  • Compost bays
  • Compost bins and turners
  • Worm farms
  • Mulch piles (Council)
  • Garden shed which houses various tools, solar pump and battery and hose etc.
  • Water tank which contains groundwater fed from the Council bore.the soil hub
  • Wire shed (mainly for storage of biochar and where we keep our worm farms)
  • Tools n Things library which also has a wide range of tools n things we use.

*We use the definition of soil which Matthew Evans uses in his book ‘Soil’. That is soil is only soil when it is has an association with plants. Otherwise it is just dirt. Or if you are in Perth like us it is just sand.
