Pocket Forests for the Inner City

-- THIS EVENT HAS ALREADY OCCURED --

Tuesday 24th of September 2024 6:00 pm

Did you know that with as little as 3 square metres you can transform your yard or courtyard into a pocket of biodiversity and improve local cooling? Join Dr Grey Coupland as she tells us how it can be done.

Pocket forests:

  • can be achieved with as little as 3 square metres of area
  • contain 3 to 5 native plants per square metre
  • reach maturity up to 10 times faster than traditional planting methods

Through her research at the Harry Butler Institute at Murdoch University, Dr Coupland has adapted the Miyawaki method for urban greening to Perth’s unique plant species and conditions.

In addition, Grey has created a citizen science Pocket Forests outreach program, and as part of this, has been working with students across Perth since 2021 helping them to create thriving pocket forests at their schools. Her work has been recognised by the UNESCO ‘Green Citizens’ campaign.

Grey is keen to work with communities such as ours to help us mitigate the increasing urban heat island effect and to create liveable, climate resilient and carbon negative local urban environments.
