Making a Mini-Forest – Site Tour, Movie and Presentation
Monday 11th of May 2026 6:15 pm
An inspiring site tour, documentary and presentation where we explore how biodiversity is being restored to the inner city suburbs of Boorloo
Perth using the Miyawaki pocket forest method. 🌳🌲
The afternoon will start at 5.30pm, with a short walking tour of Transition Town Vincent’s (TTV) Black Cockatoo pocket forest planted by the local community in August 2025.
At 6.30pm we will then show the documentary Making a Mini-Forest which tells the stories of different people working towards the same goal – planting mini-forests in European cities. These groups use the Miyawaki Method, a tree-planting technique that focuses on regionally native tree species, uses no chemical fertilizers or additives, planting densely, using a relatively small area of land, and requires no maintenance after a few years. This is the method adapted to WA conditions by Dr Grey Coupland and which we are using for our Black Cockatoo pocket forests. Narrated by Hannah Lewis, author of “Mini-Forest Revolution,” the documentary presents stories forming a bigger picture of planting mini-forests to counter climate change, urban heat and restore biodiversity.
We’re reshowing this documentary because of significant interest in our Black Cockatoo Forest project and our use of the Miyawaki pocket forest method to upscale it through Boorloo Perth.
After the documentary we will the be joined by Dr Grey Coupland who will give a short presentation of the work being done in Perth. Grey will be joined by Anne Courtney, TTV committee member who is co-ordinating a project to Rewild the Stuart Street Reserve in Northbridge. Anne will focus on the results and process of consulting with the local community about the project. We look forward to you joining us for an interactive and informative afternoon/evening.
