Imagining the Black Cockatoo Forest – Site Tour, Making a Mini-Forest Movie and Panel Discussion
Monday 24th of November 2025 5:00 pm
An inspiring site tour, documentary and panel discussion where we reimagine what life would be like if biodiversity was restored to the inner city suburbs of Perth. 🌳🌲
The afternoon will start at 5pm, with a short walking tour of Transition Town Vincent’s nature hub, a circularity precinct which features Perth’s first Black Cockatoo pocket forest planted by the local community in August this year. We will also explore the stage 2 planting site planned for 2026, the compost hub where we make co-composted biochar, community food forest as well as existing bushland.
At 6.30pm we will then show the documentary Making a Mini-Forest which tells the stories of different people working towards the same goal – planting mini-forests in European cities. These groups use the Miyawaki Method, a tree-planting technique that focuses on regionally native tree species, uses no chemical fertilizers or additives, planting densely, using a relatively small area of land, and requires no maintenance after a few years. This is the method adapted to WA conditions by Dr Grey Coupland and which we are using for our Black Cockatoo pocket forests. Narrated by Hannah Lewis, author of “Mini-Forest Revolution,” the documentary presents stories forming a bigger picture of planting mini-forests to counter climate change and restore biodiversity.
We’re reshowing this documentary because of significant interest in our Black Cockatoo Forest project and the idea of upscaling it through the inner city suburbs of Perth.
After the documentary we will the be joined by a number of panelists for a discussion to gain a vision for the Black Cockatoo Forest in the inner city suburbs of Perth. The panelists will include Dr Grey Coupland (Murdoch University/Pocket Forests WA), Catriona Ferrie (Rotary), Steve McCabe (Rewild Perth), Paul Kotsoglo (former President Planning Institute of WA) and Dr George Crisp (Doctors for the Environment). We look forward to you joining us for an interactive and informative afternoon/evening.
