Soil making for the Black Cockatoo Forest

Do you ever wonder why the bushland of Kings Park and in other areas of Perth seem to survive OK with natural rainfall while getting anything to grow in your garden is a water consuming and expensive affair? It has a lot to do with the amount of carbon in the 
soil which creates good soil structure, biological activity, nutrient and water holding capacity. In urban areas, most of this carbon has been removed along with the processes which regenerate it, leaving mostly sand.
In this 2 hour workshop learn how members of Transition Town Vincent’s soil hub use (mostly) locally available organics to transform sand into soil for our Black Cockatoo pocket forests. You will learn:
– the difference between sand and soil
– the basic interactions between plants and soil
– the benefits of using certain organics including biochar
– the basics of making soil amendments such as compost, composted biochar and vermicompost
– how to make and apply compost tea
– how to set up your own soil making hub
