Planning the Black Cockatoo Forest

-- THIS EVENT HAS ALREADY OCCURED --

Thursday 14th of August 2025 6:15 pm

The Black Cockatoo Forest is many small pocket forests in the one large area. We successfully made our first Miyawaki pocket forest in early August and are now ready to embark on the next stages which essentially involves making more pocket forests.

We have discovered that making a Miyawaki pocket forest requires a lot of organisation and planning, most of it done by volunteers and starting well out from the actual planting. We have also found with the Black Cockatoo pocket forest (stage 1) in Leederville that it is possible to bring the community together to achieve a common vision. In a very short period of time (6 months) we have demonstrated that it is possible to get a community team together to prepare compost and do the other things required to get the plants in the ground  We have learned a lot and now want to build on what we have learned and help other groups and individuals do the same.

Outcomes being sought from this meeting/workshop include:

  • Learning from participants or observers in the existing process what worked, what didn’t work and what could be improved on.
  • Enrolling volunteers in the next stages of this project* which include:
    • Maintenance and monitoring of the existing Black Cockatoo pocket forest (stage 1)
    • Rehabilitating and revegetating a depaved (planned) area near the Tool n Things library
    • Developing an interpretive walk trail.
  • Identifying other potential pocket forest projects in the City of Vincent or nearby which we can support and a process for taking them forward.

*Note: The City of Vincent have generously granted Transition Town Vincent (TTV) funds for 2025/2026 for:

  • Purchasing plants for another Miyawaki pocket forest.
  • Developing an interpretive trail.

We would also like to hear from you if you are interested in participating in making a pocket forest in your neighbourhood.

So if you want to be involved please come along or send an email to info@ttv.org.au . We are also keen to hear from groups which are interested in having help in developing a Miyawaki pocket forest in their area.

The bar at Floreat Athena will be open but please bring any snacks you would like to share.
