Making a Miyawaki Pocket Forest Demystified

Thursday 13th of November 2025 4:00 pm

This introductory workshop* is aimed at local groups and aspiring project coordinators in the Perth inner city region who want to make a Miyawaki pocket forest and will provide participants with an understanding of what is required to plan and make a pocket forest. It will feature presentations by Dr Grey Coupland of Murdoch University who has made around 20 pocket forests in south west Western Australia and Ian Kininmonth, project coordinator of  Transition Town Vincent’s (TTV) Black Cockatoo forest project.

With the guidance of Dr Grey Coupland, community group Transition Town Vincent (TTV) were able to gather and mobilise the local community to make a Black Cockatoo pocket forest in just 6 months in 2025. Having developed the knowledge and skills to make their first pocket forest, TTV are now in the process of making another pocket forest nearby while supporting other local groups who may want to make a Miyawaki pocket forest.

Participants will get an overview of the process for planning and making a Miyawaki pocket forest, what needs to be done when and by who and information on resources to help you plan and make a pocket forest. The aim is to support this workshop with more detailed  workshops on specific issues (e.g. soil health basics, setting up and operating a community compost hub).

The workshop will be conducted near the Black Cockatoo pocket forest and will include a tour of the forest and associated circularity precinct.  Registration is essential and can be made at https://events.humanitix.com/making-a-miyawaki-pocket-forest-demystified . A fee of $20 per participant is to cover costs.

Note: *A more comprehensive and semi-formal training course on making Miyawaki pocket forests is being planned for delivery in 2026/2027.
