BushFires Community Vigil

-- THIS EVENT HAS ALREADY OCCURED --

Friday 17th of January 2020 5:30 pm

At 5.30pm on Friday January 17th, Extinction Rebellion WA, together with School Strike 4 Climate, we will be jointly holding a Bushfires Community Vigil. The bushfire crisis has left the community in a state of mourning. We need to come together to remember what we have lost.

Starting in the Cultural Centre amphitheatre outside PICA, there are planned contributions from volunteer firefighters, First Nations speakers, school children and others personally affected by the terrible damage inflicted to lives and country by this tragedy. We will then be led in a silent vigil and procession down James St, collectively holding an eerie silence in a powerful and resonant communal experience.

Friday 17th is the first night of Fringe World so our silent procession will be a moving contrast to the party atmosphere alongside. We will culminate at the Russell Square Pleasure Gardens, where XRWA are launching our ‘1.5 Degrees’ reading of the 2018 IPCC Report, spelling out the science of the climate emergency over 12 nights.

In this way we will join the dots and dramatically show the link between the lived bushfire experience and the science behind it; the Bushfire Emergency is the Climate Emergency. Join us to communicate a powerful, moving expression of collective shock, sadness and rage about the fires tragedy and what lies behind it. We will pay our respects and demonstrate our unshakeable communal resolve to translate this crisis into dramatic action. Channel your emotions and find an outlet in a safe, communal space while sending a powerful ultimatum to the forces that have brought us to this.
