Making a Black Cockatoo Pocket Forest Demystified
Thursday 2nd of April 2026 4:15 pm
This introductory workshop* is aimed at local groups and aspiring project coordinators in Boorloo Perth who want to make a Miyawaki pocket forest and will provide participants with an understanding of what is required to plan, make and maintain a pocket forest. It will feature presentations by Dr Grey Coupland of Murdoch University who has made over 20 pocket forests in south west Western Australia and Ian Kininmonth, project coordinator of Transition Town Vincent’s (TTV) Black Cockatoo forest project.
With the guidance of Dr Grey Coupland, community group Transition Town Vincent (TTV) were able to gather and mobilise the local community to make a Black Cockatoo pocket forest in just 6 months in 2025. Having developed the knowledge and skills to make and maintain their first pocket forest, TTV are now in the process of making a second Black Cockatoo pocket forest nearby while supporting other local groups who may want to make a Miyawaki pocket forest.
The short course will cover:
- Objectives for making pocket forests
- Land and other resource requirements
- Community engagement and recruitment

- Making soil amendments
- The planting
- Costs and funding
- Project management
- Maintenance and monitoring
The short course will feature a tour of Transition Town Vincent’s demonstration Black Cockatoo pocket forest (stage 1) and stage 2 site and associated soil making hub.
Supper will be supplied.
The workshop will be conducted near the Black Cockatoo pocket forest and will include a tour of the forest and associated circularity precinct.
