Takayna - The Heart of Lutruwita Tasmania

Monday 2nd of February 2026 6:15 pm

Through the power of personal stories, be taken on a journey to the vast and threatened landscapes of Australia’s largest temperate rainforest in northwest Lutruwita / Tasmania.

This area, known as Takayna / Tarkine, is one of the last wild places on Earth. It is a stronghold for Earth’s largest marsupial carnivore, the Tasmanian Devil, and critical habitat for the Tasmanian Masked Owl, Wedge-tailed Eagles (the nation’s largest birds of prey) Spotted-tailed Quolls, and the Giant Freshwater Crayfish. It is under threat from logging, mining and Chinese government-owned mining company MMG’s plan to build a dam for toxic tailings from its Rosebery silver-lead-zinc mine in Takayna.

‘Takayna — the Heart of Lutruwita’ is an inspiring and hopeful film about the battle to defend Takayna from mining and logging.

To support the Bob Brown Foundation’s campaign to protect this ancient rainforest the Takayna Trail Run will be held in February this year. Local Vincent resident Meluka Bancroft will be running the 62km ultra though Takayna, her 10th, and longest, ultra marathon. She has taken on this challenge to contribute to the vital work the Bob Brown Foundation is doing to protect the Takayna rainforest, and to communicate to a broader audience how important protecting nature is. Meluka’s aim is to raise $4,000 towards protecting Takayna, you can donate here – https://takaynatrail2026.raiselysite.com/meluka-bancroft These people are fighting for its protection, and you can as well.

Following the documentary there will be a panel discussion on urban trails.
